The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) celebrated its 6th anniversary and held the launch ceremony of the 'Climate Change: Past, Present, Future' exhibition last Saturday (14 December).

Officiating at the 6th anniversary celebration and launch ceremony were Mr Tse Chin-wan, Under Secretary for the Environment of the Government of the HKSAR, Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, Miss Donna Tang, Executive Manager, Charities (Grant Making – Sports and Environment) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Dr Rebecca Lee, Founder of the Polar Museum Foundation, and Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Chairman of the Steering Committee for Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change.

In his welcome address, Professor Tuan said, ‘CUHK has put extensive effort into developing  a culture of sustainability on campus. We also endeavour to increase public awareness of the importance of sustainable development through a wide variety of community education programmes, in particular those initiated by the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change.’ Professor Tuan believed that the new ‘Climate Change: Past, Present, Future’ exhibition will help promote important green concepts, such as environmental protection, and the importance of a low-carbon lifestyle and sustainable development in the community. Professor Tuan also expressed his gratitude to the Environment Bureau and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for their longstanding support for CUHK and the Museum.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tse said, ‘Climate change presents challenges to the world. Hong Kong, as an advanced international city, cannot stay immune. The HKSAR Government has been actively and effectively fostering community engagement to encourage members of the public to practise energy saving as well as waste and carbon reduction in their daily lives.’ Mr Tse also expressed his gratitude to CUHK for sparing no efforts over the years in educating the public and students to lead a low-carbon life.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been a staunch supporter of various environmental protection projects. It is committed to tackling climate change issues through the use of innovative technology and facilitating cross-sectoral collaboration, thereby contributing to Hong Kong’s sustainable development. Funded by the Club, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change showcases valuable collections from the Poles and interactive exhibits to enhance the public’s knowledge on climate change and their awareness about environmental issues. To strengthen the Museum’s role in environmental education, the Club also supported the launch of ‘JC–CUHK Climate Action’ in 2017, which has organised a wide variety of educational activities to help the public understand the importance of green living.

After the ceremony, the guests were invited to join a guided tour of the ‘Climate Change: Past, Present, Future’ exhibition. The exhibition, which is a new addition to the ‘Mobile Jockey Club MoCC’, takes visitors on a fascinating journey through time, from climate records to present global challenges. It encourages the public to learn about the role humans play in climate change and sustainable development, and come together in building a sustainable future.

The exhibition modules of the ‘Mobile Jockey Club MoCC’ series are available for loan, at no charge, by schools and organisations. The themes of the exhibitions include ‘Polar Vision’, ‘Climate Change and Me’, and ‘Climate Change: Past, Present, Future’, the latest installation of the series.
