Madhavi, an Indian woman, with a photograph of her deceased husband D. Mahendar.  He was a tenant farmer who committed suicide when he was unable to repay a farm loan of $14,325.

Vasanthi with a photograph of her father, a debt-stressed farmer from Nagapattinam, India, who supposedly "died of a heart attack".  Some of my interviewees were reluctant to admit that their loved ones had committed suicide, and pretended that they had died from natural causes.

Kavitha with a photograph of her husband O. Kasayya, a tenant farmer who committed suicide because he was unable to repay a farm loan of $5,730.

V. Mary with a photograph of her deceased father Anthony Swamy, a tenant farmer in Tamil Nadu.  Anthony supposedly passed away at the age of 45 ‘from a heart attack’, induced by worry over an unpaid loan of $702.

Ramanna with a photograh of his deceased wife R. Venkatamma.  Husband and wife were both farmers in Andhra Pradesh.  Venkatamma committed suicide over an unpaid loan of $8,428.

Kavita with a photograph of her deceased husband Veeramani, a debt-stressed tenant farmer in Tamil Nadu.  He supposedly ‘died of a heart attack’ at the age of 30.

Ramanamma with a photograph of her husband A. Lakshmaiah, a farmer who committed suicide over an unpaid $18,623 loan.  The women behind her have also lost their farmer husbands to suicides caused by despair over unpaid debts.

S. Ramesh with a photograph of his older brother S. Kaiyan Sundaram.  Both men were farmers in Tamil Nadu, India. Sundaram supposedly "died of a heart attack" caused by worry over unpaid loans.

This woman’s husband, a tenant farmer, committed suicide because he was unable to pay back a farm loan.  She did not even have his photograph to show me.
